2006-12-23
The Sucker Brook project adds 4000 feet of frontage along Sucker Brook which is a stream of major importance to the water quality of the Lower Bay of Kezar Lake. The Sucker Brook wetlands are unique. These habitats support our resident bald eagles, the state endangered eastern box turtle and the musk turtle, a species of statewide concern. Sucker Brook is rated as highly valued habitat for 13 of 91 species of federal concern. The GLLT received a grant of $153,000 from the Land for Maine's Future program which was applied toward the $400,000 purchase priceand helped to make this purchae possible.
The Five Kezars Association raised $139,000 in order to purchase the Lovejoy property, which runs between the 10 acre Back Pond parecel already owned by the GLLT, and National Forest land. This property, which lies in Stoneham, has high conservation values and will maintain the natural character of the land as well as insuring the preservation of the water quality of the Five Kezars.
