Gardening for Pollinators

  • Greater Lovell Land Trust PO Box 225 Lovell, ME, 04051 United States (map)

Pollinators (butterflies, bees, hummingbirds, moths, wasps, flies, birds, bats, beetles, and other insects) that are native to Maine are facing growing threats. For one popular pollinator, the eastern monarch butterfly, the data for the 2023-2024 winter revealed a 59% decrease in the population at the wintering area. If pollinators continue to decline then the fruits, vegetables, and flowering plants that rely on the pollinators to spread the pollen are predicted to also decrease. It has been estimated that one out of every three bites of food we eat exists because of pollinators. During this presentation, the reasons for the decline of pollinators will be discussed, and ways to assist the pollinators with our gardening practices will be outlined.

Program will be held at Hobbs Library.
