What is a nature play space?

Nature play spaces/playgrounds are a fast-growing movement that encourages natural play on structures designed around natural elements (e.g., boulders, stumps, logs) in an outdoor environment, an alternative to the plastic, metal, manufactured playgrounds we more often see today. Nature playspaces promote unstructured play that stimulates creativity and imagination, enhances sensory experiences, facilitates social interaction, fosters a connection with nature, and reduces stress and anxiety.

Some elements that will be included in the play space include:

  • entrance arbor

  • boat

  • hopscotch

  • climbing logs

  • balancing logs

  • picnic tables

  • mud kitchen

  • shelter
